79th Glorious Infantry Day

The Indian Army celebrated the 79th Infantry Day, also known as Shaurya Diwas, to honour the unmatched courage, valour, and sacrifices of the Infantrymen who have steadfastly defended the sovereignty and integrity of the Nation since Independence.

The day holds special significance in India’s military history — on 27 October 1947, troops of the 1st Battalion of the Sikh Regiment were airlifted to Srinagar to defend Jammu & Kashmir from invading forces, marking the Indian Army’s first military operation after Independence. This historic event laid the foundation for the annual celebration of Infantry Day.

The Infantry, the largest fighting arm of the Indian Army, continues to play a pivotal role in safeguarding the Nation’s frontiers, conducting counter-insurgency and counter-terrorist operations, and maintaining internal security under the most challenging conditions.

To commemorate the occasion, a solemn Wreath-Laying Ceremony was organised at Shaheed Smarak, Dronanchal, Bhopal, to pay homage to all Infantrymen who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the Nation.

On this momentous occasion, Lt Gen Arvind Chauhan, General Officer Commanding, Sudarshan Chakra Corps, extended warm greetings and best wishes to all ranks, veterans, and families of the Infantry.
