Mumbai: Expressing concern over the evolving geo-political situation in the Middle East and its potential ripple effects on India\u2019s economy, senior transport leader Bal Malkit Singh has urged the Government of India to take proactive and preventive measures to safeguard key sectors, particularly the road transport and MSME ecosystem.Highlighting the emerging risk of an \u201cenergy war\u201d leading to shortages of crude oil, gases, and allied products, he noted that early signs of disruption are already visible across industries. Rising input costs, reduced production, and operational challenges are beginning to impact factories, small businesses, and trading establishments across the country.<\/p>\n

The road transport sector, which serves as the backbone of India\u2019s supply chain, is witnessing a gradual slowdown in movement due to reduced industrial output. In certain segments, vehicle movement has reportedly declined by up to 50%, with fears that this could worsen to 70\u201380% if the situation persists.<\/p>\n

Further concerns include rising costs of tyres, fuels, lubricants, and essential inputs like AdBlue (urea), along with the shutdown or increased pricing at highway dhabas and eateries, adversely affecting the driver community. There is also a growing risk of driver migration due to reduced work opportunities. The cascading impact is expected to increase production costs, strain MSMEs, and push up the overall cost of living for citizens.<\/p>\n

The road transport sector, being the lifeline of trade and commerce, is already experiencing stress due to reduced movement and rising operational costs. If timely interventions are not considered, the situation could escalate significantly in the coming weeks. It is essential to support MSMEs and transporters through relief measures such as deferment of EMIs, soft loan schemes, and tax relaxations to ensure business continuity and economic stability.\u201d

While expressing full confidence in the leadership of Hon\u2019ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji for effectively handling any emerging crisis\u2014as demonstrated during past challenges including COVID-19\u2014Singh emphasized the need for timely policy support to mitigate ground-level disruptions.<\/p>\n

He further stated that the industry stands committed to supporting national interests and ensuring continuity of supply chains, provided adequate relief and policy backing are extended during this critical period.<\/p>\n
