Continuous and coordinated efforts are being undertaken in Madhya Pradesh under the ‘Anemia Mukt Bharat Program’ to address anemia among children and women. Becoming anemia-free implies maintaining normal hemoglobin levels in children and women, which contributes significantly to their physical and mental development. The program has emerged as a key initiative toward strengthening maternal and child health in the state. As a positive outcome of sustained and effective efforts, Madhya Pradesh has secured first position nationwide for two consecutive quarters in the Government of India’s HMIS ranking under the Anemia Mukt Bharat.
Deputy Chief Minister Shri Rajendra Shukla expressed satisfaction over the successful implementation of the programme, stating that this achievement is the result of the commitment, dedication, and teamwork of the state’s health system. He lauded the tireless efforts of doctors, nursing staff, ANMs, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, and field personnel associated with the campaign, noting that their hard work, sensitivity, and spirit of service made large-scale screening, treatment, and awareness possible. Extending his congratulations to all health workers, Shri Shukla expressed confidence that they would continue to work with the same dedication toward the goal of making the state completely anemia-free.
During the current financial year 2025–26, the first phase of the Dastak Abhiyan was conducted from 22 July to 16 September 2025. During this period, hemoglobin screening was ensured for 7.062 million children aged 6–59 months using digital hemoglobin meters. Following screening, approximately 3.521 million mildly and moderately anemic children were provided with necessary medical treatment, while 3,575 severely anemic children were identified and ensured blood transfusion or appropriate management at the district level.
Under the campaign, 942,000 pregnant women across the state were screened for anemia. Among them, 302,000 women with moderate to severe anemia and 10,660 women with very severe anemia were identified and treated through Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) supplementation, iron sucrose, FCM, and blood transfusion as required. These efforts have not only improved the health status of pregnant women but have also strengthened the cause of safe motherhood.
Multi-Pronged Strategy Adopted for Anemia Prevention and Treatment
A comprehensive, multi-dimensional strategy has been adopted in the state for the prevention and treatment of anemia. This includes regular distribution of Iron and Folic Acid tablets and syrup, routine health check-ups of pregnant and lactating women, deworming campaigns for children, promotion of nutritious diets, weekly iron supplementation for adolescent girls, screening in schools and Anganwadi centers, and extensive nutrition and health awareness drives. In addition, the Health Department, in coordination with the Women and Child Development Department, has undertaken widespread information, education, and communication activities to enhance public awareness.
It is noteworthy that the Government of India launched the Anemia Mukt Bharat campaign in 2018 under the National Nutrition Mission (Poshan Abhiyaan). The program aims to improve maternal and child health and eliminate anemia among women and children. The dedicated efforts being undertaken in Madhya Pradesh are providing a strong foundation toward achieving this objective and are playing a significant role in building a healthier, stronger, and more capable society
